Brought up on the family farm in the heart of Strathspey with a local plant contracting business in the house too, I was always going to want to work with the land in this beautiful part of the world we are blessed to call home.
As a child my playground was a mix of agricultural buildings, tree climbing and many many hours guddling in the burn.
I was very much at one with nature, knowing intimitely the environment and  its inhabitants around me from caddis fly larvae, newts, brown trout, squirrels, rabbits, raptors and wrens to farm animals, ferrets, cats and border collies.
These and the landscape were like friends, it being difficult to get to see other children with busy parents and living rurally.
 
Without knowing it then, the hands on education the environment gave me as well as helping out with jobs of various kinds, built the foundations for where I wanted to go in time. The school years were often uninspiring,  this country boy longed to be outdoors, although upon leaving, I entered into and completed a multi discipline craft apprenticeship which included three years of college for the electricity board. This gave me an electrical and mechanical engineering knowledge and qualification coupled with practical often rural work in arduous conditions under pressure such as in storm conditions repairing overhead lines. This industry instilled a strong awareness of health and safety, method statements, permit to work and the like and some of my older mentors still inspire me now, every job to the highest standard possible.

Diggers were still where I wanted to be though, so for a few years I combined the two, working with contracting companies all over the UK before eventually leaving the energy sector to concentrate on groundworks.
Having now gained experience in most excavator based disciplines, from service installs, landscaping, A9 dualling, quarry work to demolition and archeological digs.
A particular favourite job was building the pier into loch ness at Urquhart castle, involved in all roles from piling in the oak beams to welding the temporary structure I would travel the excavator out on over the loch, phototographed at the time by JCB themselves.
I hold multiple operator categories for a variety of machines including all terrain vehicles,  experience with tractors, chainsaws and others in between.

The last six years I have been lucky enough to work with an environmental engineering company as site supervisor / machine operator, finding real enjoyment in the rural landscape again with multiple peatland restorations, river and flood works, large scale cabling projects, hill roads and ditching as well as a few less usual jobs such as wetland creation and fire fighting! I am passionate about this work, taking genuine interest in the science and overall picture we are aiming to achieve.

In my spare time  I can often be found working on classic cars, machinery or my old house, gardening or walking the dogs. My border collie accompanies where possible.
